Brazilian ex-President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, popularly known as Lula, has called for the impeachment of President Bolsonaro. Lula, 74, who is just out of prison is still a strong political figure and voice in Brazil where he led for two terms.
In an interview via webcam with CNN from his home in Sao Paolo, Lula said that Bolsonaro has committed several crimes, and has led the country with “irresponsible and negligent handling”, for which he deserves to be impeached.
“Bolsonaro has committed many crimes of irresponsibility and I think he already deserves to be punished for that”, Former President said in the interview.
Lula was released last November from jail after serving reduced period of 18 months, against the 8 years and 10 months. He was charged with corruption and money laundering against which he is appealing.
Lula is popularly known for his fiery leadership and is known to mobilize crowds with his speeches. He is glorified for leading Brazil through an economic boom, taking the country from 15th position in 2003 to sixth most powerful economy by 2012 when he left the office.
Since past five years, growth of Brazil has ‘stagnated’ according to World Bank, ranking 9th in economy ratings.
Lula criticized President Bolsonaro for downplaying the coronavirus since beginning and failing to control the condition at the right time.
Lula further praised the local leaders for trying to control the pandemic crisis at their levels. He said, “The governors became enemies, the mayors became enemies, all of those that defend that Brazil treat this pandemic responsibly, are considered enemies of the President.”
The pandemic crisis that has eroded Brazil’s economy with skyrocketing cases, making it the country at second position of most positive cases, has led to unpopularity of Bolsonaro. According to recent Datafolha opinion polls, as many as 46% of Brazilians are in support of Bolsonaro being impeached.
