Miguel Diaz-Canel, Chairman of the State Council and the Council of Ministers of Cuba, met Monday with EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini during her official visit to the island. This was reported on the website of the government of the Caribbean country.
The parties noted the good condition and positive dynamics in the development of bilateral relations, and also discussed the strengthening of US sanctions on the island and the consequences of these measures. One of the topics of discussion was the application of the Helms-Burton Act, which allows American citizens to sue individuals and legal entities that control property in Cuba, nationalized in the last century. The European Union opposes the extraterritorial application of unilateral measures against Cuba and considers them to be contrary to international law. EU authorities have repeatedly stated that they will protect the interests of their companies operating on the island.
Earlier on Monday, Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, Cuban Foreign Minister and Foreign Minister of Cuba, chaired the meeting of the EU Joint Council – Cuba, which addressed investment in island agriculture, food security, combating climate change and environmental protection. The meeting was also attended by ambassadors of several countries of the community and the Spanish Secretary of State for International Cooperation and Ibero-American and Caribbean countries, Juan Pablo de Laiglessia.
