In three areas of Bangkok, a series of seven small explosions occurred, four people were injured. The city hosts a meeting of foreign ministers of the countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), which was attended by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Russian Minister Sergey Lavrov.
The first three explosions occurred at about 05:00 local time (01:00 Moscow time) in the Pratu Nam area, one of the bombs was in a pile of dry leaves, three women were injured, sweeping the streets. Pratu Nam is located in close proximity to the congress center at the Centara Grand Hotel, where the summit takes place.
After the explosions repeated at 08:00 and at 09:30, including the city’s highest 77-storey MahaNakhon skyscraper, its security guard was injured, and also at 10:00 near the General Staff Building of the Thai Armed Forces. So far, no one has claimed responsibility for the explosions, the authorities began investigating the incident.
Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-Ocha immediately promised to investigate and strengthen security measures in the capital. “I condemn those who arranged it, such cases are detrimental to the peace and image of the country,” he said. Under the leadership of the Chief of the General Police of Thailand, General of Police ChakthipChaychind, an investigation headquarters was immediately established, which will immediately hold an emergency meeting.
