A Guide to the Historic Trump-Kim Summit

The long-awaited summit between Donald Trump, President of the United States, and Kim Jong Un, the North Korean leader, has finally taken place in Singapore. It was certainly a historical summit.

This summit is particularly notable since there were real fears inly 6 months ago that a war would erupt between North Korea and the US. After all, Trump was then at the peak of his “fire and fury” rhetoric while North Korea was conducting missile tests. As such, the summit itself is a major achievement, irrespective of the results.

However, the fact remains that the summit has failed to answer many important questions. Instead, questions have mounted up as to the actual achievements of the summit. No one can state in precise terms which side came out the bigger winner out of the summit or what is going to happen next.

Nonetheless, both leaders managed to fulfill at least one of their aims and that is propaganda. The summit was filled with innumerable photo ops that will serve as propaganda for cementing their political legitimacy.

For Trump, the reality star, it was certainly one of the most spectacular events he has been a part of. After all, he managed to have a summit with a North Korean leader, something no US President has ever done or even attempted. Similarly, Kim Jong Un will go down in history as the first leader to embrace diplomacy and sit down with a US President. He is in the global spotlight for the right reasons. The world is now seeing him as a dexterous statesman instead of a dictator. That is, in itself, a significant victory since no North Korean leader has been viewed in this way before.

Be that as it may, there has been a surprising lack of actual diplomatic achievements at this summit. Trump has failed to secure a complete guarantee that Pyongyang will dismantle its nuclear weapons. North Korea, however, claimed a victory when Trump stated that the US-South Korea military drills will be stopped immediately.

Only time can tell if this summit can bring actual results for both nations and the world at large.
