Japan protested Russia because of exercises in the Kuril Islands

Japan protested Russia in connection with the shooting practice on one of the Kuril Islands contested by the Japanese side – Kunashir, YoshihideSuga, Secretary-General of the Cabinet of Ministers of Japan, said at a press conference on Monday.

According to him, the protest was sent through diplomatic channels.

Suga noted that “the strengthening of the Russian military presence is incompatible with our country’s position with regard to the four northern islands.”

Russia notified the Japanese government about the planned exercises, which will last from 5 to 10 August.

It is noted that the Japanese side has repeatedly protested against the exercises, but the Russian side believes that Tokyo has no right to protest, since the exercises are taking place in Russia.

Japan claims the four southern islands of the Kuril chain – Iturup, Kunashir, Shikotan and Habomai, referring to the Treatise on Trade and the Borders of 1855.

Moscow’s position is that the Southern Kurils became part of the USSR following the results of the Second World War, and Russian sovereignty over them, having an international legal framework, cannot be doubted.

In their turn, Tokyo continues to declare that a peace treaty will be concluded only after solving the problem of the “northern territories” that are “under occupation”.
