Russian President Vladimir Putin will meet on Wednesday, September 25, in Moscow with Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, who arrived in Russia on a working visit the day before.
According to the Kremlin’s press service, the heads of state “will discuss current issues in bilateral relations, as well as key international and regional issues, including in the context of the difficult situation around Venezuela.”
Spokesman for the Russian leader Dmitry Peskov explained to reporters that Putin and Maduro will first meet face to face, after which Russian-Venezuelan talks will be held in the form of a working breakfast. Peskov added that bilateral relations would be discussed at the talks, indicating that Moscow and Caracas “have partnership projects, the implementation of which is ongoing.” In addition, according to the presidential spokesperson, the leaders will exchange views on regional issues, “primarily on the topic of direct intervention in Ibero-American affairs by third countries.” Signing of documents following the results of negotiations is not planned.
Upon arriving in Moscow on September 24, Maduro wrote on Twitter that “the fraternity that the two countries have built in recent years is the fundamental axis for building a prosperous future for Venezuela.” Earlier, the Venezuelan leader also reported that, in addition to negotiations with Putin, he will meet with Russian businessmen to discuss “the dynamics of the development of bilateral relations and the opportunity to give them an additional impetus.”
In an interview with Russia-24, Maduro expressed gratitude to Russia for supporting the sovereignty of the Latin American country and solidarity with its people. He noted that Russia and Venezuela are connected by relations characterized by the mutual trust of leaders. Maduro also pointed out that Caracas sees Russia as an important partner in areas such as military-technical cooperation, energy and trade.
