Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro said Colombia and the United States are preparing provocations on the border with the Bolivarian Republic of. He made the corresponding statement on Friday during a speech to representatives of the transport industry, which was broadcast on state television.
“I have information that the Colombian government and the Southern Command of the US Military Forces are thinking of provocative actions on the Colombian-Venezuelan border in order to try to divert attention from the popular uprising against President of Colombia Ivan Duque. National armed forces should be on high alert “he said.
Maduro also called on the military “to be prepared to defend the peace and sovereignty of Venezuela.”
The situation in Venezuela escalated after the local opposition leader Juan Guaidó, whose appointment to the post of parliament speaker two days earlier was canceled by the Supreme Court, declared himself acting president. The United States recognized him as the interim head of state, they were joined by members of the Lima Group (with the exception of Mexico), the Organization of American States and most of the EU countries. Maduro called the incident an attempted coup and announced the severance of diplomatic relations with the United States.
