Mexican Senate approves President’s plan of creating new national guard

Mexico’s Senate has approved President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador’s plan for creating a new national guard. This is a central plank of the government’s strategy for subduing gang violence that has claimed more than tens of thousands of lives over the past decade. The bill was unanimously passed by 127 senates, nut only the president’s party had agreed to put the new security into action. The security force would be made up of police and soldiers under civilians instead of having military control.
