US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo traveled to Russia for talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin against the background of ongoing tensions between the two countries. For Pompeo, this is the first visit to Russia as the head of American diplomacy. It will be the first official meeting between American and Russian officials of this level since July 2018, when US President Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin held talks face to face in the capital of Finland.
The US State Department has previously announced that Pompeo will arrive on May 13 in Moscow, where he is expected to meet with embassy officials and representatives of the US business community. It is planned that on May 14, the Secretary of State will travel to Sochi for talks with Putin and Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
“The starting point that we should have when we discuss our policy towards Russia is to frankly admit that Russia has taken a series of aggressive and destabilizing actions on the world stage,” the US State Department official told. The employee, who spoke on condition of anonymity, added that Pompeo’s current trip represents “an opportunity to bring such points and our expectations to the Russian government, as well as to see how to pave the way forward.”
