Two employees of the Embassy of Sweden will leave Moscow at the request of Russia. This decision was made in response to the actions of the Swedish authorities.
On the expulsion of two employees of the Embassy of Sweden from Russia, the spokesman for the Foreign Ministry of the Kingdom of Patrick Nilsson reports. He called this decision “a response to the refusal to grant a Swedish visa to a Russian diplomat.”
Maria Zakharova, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, called the expulsion of diplomats a retaliatory measure.
Last December, a Swedish diplomat was expelled from Russia. Then it was also explained by the response to the refusal to grant diplomatic visas to two Russians.
The dispute between Russia and Sweden has been going on for several months. According to Expressen, one of the reasons was the scandal around the embassy staff in Stockholm, EvgenyUmerenko. In February, the Swedish security services said that the latter, in one of the restaurants, met with a 45-year-old Swedish citizen, allegedly recruited by Russia. The Swedish counterintelligence officers assumed that Umerenko was a member of the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service.
Despite the call of the Russian ambassador to the Swedish Foreign Ministry and repeated demands to send Umerenko home, the latter continued to be in Sweden, which caused discontent among local special services. He returned home only at the end of March. After that, Moscow requested diplomatic visas for new employees, but was refused. Comment on this fact Nilsson refused.
