The US is considering the possibility of holding an APEC summit in January on its territory

The United States is considering the possibility of holding a summit of Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) in January in the country after the cancellation of the summit in Chile. Said on Thursday the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia, Sayfuddin Abdullah following a conversation with US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo.

“Secretary of State Pompeo called me when we were in Bangkok, asked about the position of Malaysia, since Chile was unable to host the APEC summit in November, and the US is thinking of organizing an APEC summit in January in the United States,” the minister said.

However, he noted that Malaysia was against the American proposal.  “I informed US officials based in Bangkok that we did not consider this a good idea,” he pointed out.

The next APEC summit is due to take place in Malaysia at the end of 2020.  In 2019, it was supposed to be held in November in Chile, but President Sebastian Pignera canceled it due to outbreak of protests.
