After labeling China as a ‘currency manipulator’, U.S. now called China a “thuggish regime” for revealing the photographs and personal details of a U.S. diplomat who met with student leaders of Hong Kong’s pro-democracy movement.
The accusation was unusually sharp and raised tensions between Washington and Beijing.
The Hong Kong office of China’s Foreign Ministry on Thursday asked an explanation on the accusation from the United States.
A photograph, published in a Hong Kong newspaper Ta Kung Pao under the headline “Foreign Forces Intervene” was of a U.S. diplomat, who identified as Julie Eadeh of the consulate’s political section. In the photograph, Julie was talking with student leaders in the lobby of a luxury hotel.
China has attacked the United States, of inciting the demonstrations in Hong Kong.
