US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo called on the leaders of political forces in Lebanon to contribute to the early formation of a new government after the resignation of Prime Minister Saad Hariri. This is stated in his statement, distributed on Tuesday by the press service of the State Department.
“In light of the resignation of Prime Minister Hariri, the United States is urging Lebanese political leaders to urgently contribute to the formation of a new government that can build a stable, prosperous and secure Lebanon that needs all of its citizens,” said Pompeo.
“Any violence and provocative behavior must stop, we urge the Lebanese army and security services to continue to ensure the rights and safety of protesters,” he said.
On Tuesday, Hariri submitted a letter of resignation to the president of the republic, Michel Aoun, from the post of head of the coalition cabinet. This decision was made against the backdrop of ongoing mass protests since October 17, paralyzing Lebanon. Demonstrators in the central squares of Beirut demanded the resignation of the coalition cabinet, the dissolution of parliament and the holding of early elections.
